Salmon sperm skin care this, salmon sperm facial that. Are people actually slathering their faces with salmon sperm in the name of glass skin? Sorta. PDRN is one of the latest, buzziest skin care ingredients in the sand box (the name stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide), and it marks a new generation of stem cell-derived regenerative aesthetics and skin care. PDRN is “derived from salmon DNA, traditionally extracted from salmon reproductive cells,” says Dr. Casey Goodman, Tiev Med Spa founder, CEO, and medical director. “The DNA is highly purified, refined, and processed into biocompatible fragments that contain no biological material.”

So, in short—yeahPDRN is commonly derived from salmon sperm. However, vegan PDRN exists and it’s a plant-based alternative that’s also commonly found in topical formulations like serums and creams. Once you get past the initial weirdness, you can take it at face value and see just how good it is for the skin. Not only does it help make the skin glow, but it takes that a few steps further with the ability to promote skin regeneration and is ideal for those experiencing inflammation, dullness, fine lines, wrinkles, a compromised skin barrier, and early signs of aging.

While PDRN sounds like just a fad, it’s actually the beginning of an even bigger element in skin care and aesthetics: stem-cell derived treatments. “We’re moving away from filling and freezing and toward regeneration, using the body’s own biology to rebuild skin from within,” says Lisa Goodman, PA-C and founder of GoodSkin Clinics. The focus is no longer just wrinkles or smile lines, it’s skin longevity as a whole, and what you’re doing to treat the big picture. “The field has moved beyond single molecules like PDRN or PRFM. That’s where the most meaningful results are happening,” Goodman continues. “[Stem cell-derived treatments] deliver the full biological package—hundreds of growth factors and signaling molecules working together the way your body actually heals.”

To get the most salmon sperm for your buck, in-office, injectable treatments are the most effective vehicle (side note: salmon sperm injections are not FDA-approved in the U.S, making it an off-label treatment), but that’s not to say you should look past PDRN skin care. “It’s important to view topical PDRN as a maintenance strategy,” says Dr. Goodman. “It can enhance radiance, support barrier repair, and improve overall skin quality, but professional delivery remains the gold standard for significant regenerative outcomes.”

I’ve noticed a major difference in my skin radiance and overall barrier strength since adding topical PDRN into my routine. I’d say it’s a great entry point into the buzzy ingredient—and now I’m hooked. Shop my favorite formulas, plus expert recommendations for a firm, luminous complexion, from $22 below.
